Meet the Makers Monday - Tailoring School Ladies
Share
At Baskets and Beads Kenya, our mission is to create sustainable social enterprises and provide mentorship to build self-sustaining families through entrepreneurship.
To accomplish this we have created a training plan for the ladies to ensure they have the skills to earn income and provide for their families. We have funded training in the past for some of the ladies to learn how to make purses and have given micro loans for a few ladies to sell food items or start a chicken coup.
Now with funding provided by the @temecularotary, two of the ladies (Dorcas who you read about in our #MTMM last week and Pauline) have started attending a 9 month tailoring school in July 2024. Some of the products we are creating require significant skills to ensure sizing is accurate and precision and continuity are applied to the designs.
Many schools required the students to possess a high school diploma. Most of the ladies did not have the ability to attend school which is why our educating children program is ensuring school fees get paid for as man kids as possible. This year we are sponsoring 9 kids for high school. DM for donation opportunities.
We discovered a school that did not require the diploma and enrolled the ladies. They are training on basic and advanced aspects of tailoring and sewing. At the end of the training they will have acquired the skill to create the dresses, aprons, pillows, table runner sets, dog bandanas and other products.
The ultimate goal is to get our tailoring group into their own small shop in town in Kitale, Kenya. They will be able to tailor make clothing and make school uniforms, and items for restaurants and hotels such as pillows, aprons and table runner sets.
This will enable them to build sustainable regular income to care for their families and achieve their dreams.
