Meet the Makers Monday - meet Dorcas.•
•
Dorcas is 33 years old, a mother of 5 children. She grew up on the streets of Kitale Kenya then ended up in Kipsongo slum. She is the Kenya Team Manager in the Kipsongo slum where the ladies live. She works directly with Leila, our Kenya Director.
•
Dorcas is considered a leader in the community which is a rare thing for a woman to be a leader according to tribal traditions. She is part of the decision making committee in the Kipsongo community which is significant because women don’t typically have a voice.
•
Dorcas takes care of one of our sponsored girls for high school. She had dropped out due to lack of school fees, but through our Sponsorship program she was able to go back to school.
Dorcas is proficient in making: Seed bead baskets, handbags, necklaces like the Leila necklace, braided seed bead necklace, paper beads, she is also part of the sewing group that makes aprons, dog bandanas, dresses, table sets, skirts etc.
•
Dorcas is one of the ladies who has benefited from the #rotaryofTemecula sponsorship of tailoring training at a formal tailoring school to add to her skill.
•
Before #basketsandbeadskenya, Dorcas was selling illegal alcohol (similar to moonshine).
•
Oftentimes she ended up in jail and her kids were left to fend for themselves. Since she started with Baskets and Beads, she’s been able to earn the income to feed her family and pay the school fees to take her kids to school.
•
We are so proud of Dorcas and we thank God for how far He has brought her.
•
Dorcas dream is to be able to move out of the slum and give her children a better safer home environment.
•
When you purchase our products to help women like Dorcas to be able to build a sustainable life for them and their families.
