Fabulous Fabrics

Fabulous Fabrics - when in Kenya we go to a place called Eastleigh to shop for beautiful African fabrics. Known as kitenge these fabrics are not made in Kenya. They come from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and West Africa.•

The photos above were a on the last trip to Kenya.  Eldonna and Leila are pictured far right in one of the hallways where fabric shops like the one pictured on the right are where we typically shop for the beautiful fabrics that become the dresses, dog bandanas, pillows, table runner sets and even the bottle cap trivets are created from. Also included are our purses that have the fabric embellishment.  Coming soon we will have cosmetic bags.

As one of many types of African printed fabrics (names vary depending on country of origin, production process, and fabric), Kitenge has a complex history.

Although closely related to the Kenyan identity Africans’ understanding in the past is that only old people wore African prints. Kenya’s cultural symbol kitenge has had a rough ride. From the colonial era of the past, when the color was considered out of place for formal spaces, to today, when the traditional method is still alive, it has become the mainstream clothing style. The dynamics of fashion are changing. There is a new perception of the Kitenge. By passing on the knowledge of printing, artisans can create their own added value.Designers love African fabrics because of the colors, textures, and geometric symbols. Clothes made from this fabric are unique, attractive and enhance individuality when worn. Clothing can be tailored to fit your body and can be completely custom-made.
These fabrics pictured on the cover photo are going to be dresses skirts and cosmetic bags. We are making both long and short dresses and can customize dresses for you.
Check out the online store for the latest and greatest or our space at Fair Trade Long Beach 4105 Bellflower, Long Beach CA.
We are excited to see these fabrics featured in the cover photo to turn into beautiful Fashions in the next month.
